Deadman Ranch

Topo Map: Colorado, Gunnison County, Bull Mountain

Game Unit 521
Elevation: 7,700' to 9,700'
Gunnison County, 2,100 acres

The town of Hotchkiss, Colorado bears the family name. This ranch has been in the same family since 1882. The ranch is located south and west of the small coal mining town of Somerset, CO. The ranch is remotely located 5 miles off the highway, in some of the best elk hunting grounds in Colorado. Deer, bear, grouse, and varmint are also found on this ranch. The main cabins are centrally located, and a well established road system makes for easy access to all hunting and recreation areas. This ranch is adjacent to over 7,000 acres of USDA Nation Forest and BLM land known for quality hunting. This property has a proven track record, annually producing high quality deer and elk for the rifleman or archer.

Bunkhouses and Camping

This is a year round property. Parking, tent, and trailer camping are permitted in designated areas. The bunkhouses are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are required.

Located on the western edge of the property, breathtaking vistas surround the newly built cabin. This cabin has a uniquely Rocky Mountain feeling. Four sets of bunk beds sleep up to eight people. The kitchen appliances and lighting are propane-fueled. The kitchen is supplied with pots and pans, but showers and drinking water are supplied only during hunting season. The cabin is heated by a wood-burning fireplace. Sanitary facilities are outdoor, but enclosed.

Directions

From the summit of McClure pass (approximately 25 miles south of Carbondale, CO) go exactly 12 miles south on highway 133. You will come to a gravel road which intersects highway 133, and heads west. Go through the (padlocked) gate, over the bridge of the West Muddy River, continuing up the trail approximately 2 miles to the cabin. NOTE: Do not take the good gravel road through the red stock gate, but continue up the old trail to the cabin.

General Notes on Deadman Ranch

- The bunk houses offer a great deal of comfort; be sure to bring clothes you can relax in.

- The general terrain varies from rolling scrub oak to Aspen groves to large draws surrounded by trees. Water holes all around the ranch and surrounding forest provide excellent wildlife viewing and hunting areas. As this is a very large area of land, you will need transportation (especially during hunting season.) We strongly suggest Jeeps, ATVs, or horses for greater mobility. Please keep in mind that this is a working sheep and cattle ranch.

- We limit the number of hunters on this ranch to eight during all hunting seasons. Archery and Black Powder seasons last seven days, Rifle lasts five to seven days (depending upon the season during which you are hunting.)

- You will do your own cooking on this ranch. If we have different groups staying on the ranch at the same time, we request that hunters in camp work together on their meals. This allows everyone to eat at the same time, and makes use of the kitchen more efficient. It also allows for a rotation of cooking and cleaning duties. It's also a great way to to meet other hunters and possibly make new friends.

- Wood is split and stacked for guests' use.

- There is no running water at this camp.

- All Colorado lottery applications to hunt this ranch must be postmarked by the first Tuesday in April. The date varies, but the deadline always falls on the first Tuesday in April.
Colorado Division of Wildlife: 303.297.1192

-The nearest town in which you can purchase supplies are either Carbondale or Paonia/Hotchkiss. Each is about an hour's drive from the ranch.

- There is no telephone on this ranch, which is also out of cell-phone range. There is a marine band radio in camp through which you can contact West Muddy Ranch.
