Numerous Elk Die After Falling Through Ice at Paonia Reservoir |
|
12/30/2008 Division of Wildlife GUNNISON, Colo. - More than a dozen elk have died after falling through thin ice at Paonia Reservoir since Sunday, according to the Colorado Division of Wildlife. "This is unfortunate and a difficult circumstance, but it is not unusual in Colorado during the winter," said J Wenum, area wildlife manager in the Gunnison area. "We usually get a few reports like this every winter from areas near rivers or lakes. Normally it's only one or two animals, not large groups." On the evening of Sunday, Dec. 28, the Colorado State Patrol received a call from a concerned citizen who reported seeing elk in the reservoir. A Division of Wildlife officer arrived at the scene about 9 p.m. and confirmed that there were eight elk in the water, about 80 yards from the nearest bank. All the animals had succumbed to the cold water and were dead. On the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 30, the DOW received two calls reporting more elk in the reservoir. A DOW officer responded and found 11 elk in the water, five of which were barely alive. The officer euthanized those animals. "There really isn't anything we can do in that type of situation," Wenum said. "Access is limited, the bank is very steep and there was no way to approach or pull animals out of the water. The animals are likely hypothermic and panicked. Unfortunately, there are multiple factors working against the elk." During winter, elk move in large herds. The reservoir is a source of drinking water for elk in that area. Apparently, numerous animals moved toward the reservoir at the same time. Some ice had formed, but it was not thick enough to hold the weight of the animals. Depending on their age and sex, individual elk can range in size from about 300 pounds to about 900 pounds. DOW officials urge citizens who may see wildlife trapped on ice or struggling in the water to resist the urge to extricate the animals. Big game animals are powerful and unpredictable. Persons who attempt to cross ice to provide assistance are at significant risk of becoming victims themselves. Anyone who witnesses this type of event should to call a DOW office or a local law enforcement agency. These types of incidents occur throughout Colorado during the winter. Paonia Reservoir is located along Colo. Highway 133 in Gunnison County about 15 miles northeast of the town of Paonia. The reservoir is an impoundment on the North Fork of the Gunnison River. |

My story is of a satisfied hunter booked by Bear Creek Outfitters. Our 2008 Rocky Mountain big game hunting adventure, was put together by Tim O’hagn. This is the second year we have booked our elk hunt with Bear Creek Outfitters. We are generally in the elk, thanks to Tim’s knowledge of the vast territory availableat the Bear Creek ranches. We hunted fourth season this year, a good thing as therewasn’t much snow early in Colorado in 2008? This year we booked a hunt on a property known as Bull Mountain in the Ted X area. We were a little apprehensive to hunt this area, as we were not familiar with the terrain. Tim assured us that Ted X was very productive. I drew a cow tag for the fourth season. My mouth was watering with the thought of filling my freezer with delicious elk steaks. During a phone conversations with Tim, we went over topo maps and devised a plan. Tim made me privy to the elk crossing patterns between ridges that he had observed over the years. He was confident I would be successful in these spot. The first few days were overcast and cool, great big game hunting weather. After glassing for hours opening morning, I decided to take Tim’s advice. I packed a few snacks, checked my water and set off for the saddle between the ridges of Ted X. I settled into a cozy thicket of scrub oak skirting a large park. Sitting there daydreaming when just as the sky began to turn opal, I was startled when five deer bounded into the park from my blind side. Bringing down my rifle I began watching the deer forage, a movement in the back of the park, caught my attention! Nine cow elk began slowly grazing their way into the opening. I was losing shooting light and didn’t have much time. I knew I needed to close the gap between me and the cows and fast! My attack plan was to hurry fifteen yards to a closer thicket. My heart raced, when I realized the deer would be spooked if I broke across the opening. No matter, that was my best position. I waited for the elk to browse into a blind spot, and the race was on. To my amazement the deer stood there and let me fast pace right past them. Crawling into the thicket I was now 200 yards from where the elk would appear. I anchored on my pack and tried to measure my breathing. A nice healthy cow grazed up over the hill, and my 7mm mag. wrote the rest of this story. My money was well spent, thanks to Tim and the knowledgeable staff at Bear Creek Outfitters. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to hunt big game in Colorado. Thanks again Tim & BCO Steve Samuels |
